Jordan has potential

Hereford United manager Graham Turner has spoken to BBC Hereford & Worcester about his first signing for next season, Jordan King.

"We've signed a young boy, Jordan King, from Telford. I saw Jordan play in the season before last, 18/19 years of age, and I thought he looked very impressive.

"He played against us at Edgar Street and I thought he had a good game. And then I saw him four or five times last season and I think he was the victim of the club going part-time. He did not quite look so sharp and did not have that same dominating role in midfield than he did the previous season.

"He did have a couple of weeks with Everton training so other people have looked at him and admired his ability. At twenty years of age, he has got a lot of potential. He is a very aggressive midfield player, sometimes to the point that aggression oversteps the mark but we can cure that. And I think we have a player with plenty of potential who can come and maybe force a place in the side and go on from there.

"I am pleased with that signing. I think that not the turmoil at Telford but the changeover at Telford, changing manager, changing staff over there, has led to the point where a young player, twenty years old has not been offered a new contract. Under the Bosman ruling we would have had to pay a fee for him had they done it right.

"So I think we have nipped in there and pinched what I think is a very good prospect. Obviously I have got close ties with Jake (his father and ex-Telford manager) but he did not recommend his son to me. I think it is what I have seen with my own eyes over two seasons and seen plenty of him. I think there is potential for him to get far, far better than Conference."

Talking about the deal, Turner continued: "It's a one season deal. What we have done with him is that we will review the contract in January. If he is going well then we will start talking again about perhaps lengthening the contract. He has got an opportunity to come full-time. He has got an opportunity to work with good people, with a good young squad of players around him and I think he will improve dramatically over what he showed last season."

Turner also confirmed that he had been talking to an un-named striker. "If we can get a striker that can get us twenty goals plus a season then we will be well on our way," he said. "Somebody with a proven goal-scoring record at Conference or higher is top of the list."

Early bird discount ends

Season tickets are selling well for 2003/04, but you'll have to pay full price as the early bird deadline has now passed.

Hereford United have reported that sales have delighted them this month, and given that a place in the top five means an extra £1 on admission, a season ticket is a way of avoiding the cost. It will also save you some money over the course of the season too, as per match, it works out cheaper to see the Bulls in action.

Meanwhile, any hopes that Hereford United had of signing Telford United attacker David Brown have been dashed. The Shropshire Star reports that he is close to signing a new two-year deal with Telford, and manager Mick Jones said: "Talks are on-going with him at the moment and we are certainly not a million miles away from agreeing terms."

Date set for new stadium ceremony

Hereford United's friendly match at Ludlow Town will be played on Tuesday 29th July.

The game has been arranged to open Ludlow's new Coors Stadium, and will take place two days after the Hereford United open day at Edgar Street.

It is hoped that by then, Graham Turner will have made some further signings to add to the signature of Jordan King from Telford United yesterday. The club has revealed that the list of available players will be received on Tuesday for their perusal.

Meanwhile, new Herefordshire Council deputy leader George Hyde has sold his shares in Hereford United, after resigning as a director a couple of weeks ago.

Hereford make first summer signing

Hereford United have swooped for their first summer signing, with Telford United's Jordan King moving to Edgar Street.

The deal reverses the trend after both scout Ron Jukes and defender Matt Clarke switched to the New Bucks Head earlier this month.

Jordan, son of former Telford boss Jake, signs a one-year deal at Edgar Street and the twenty-year-old midfielder is eager to impress Graham Turner

He told the Shropshire Star: "I spoke to Mick (Jones) at Telford and he said he was not sure whether I had a future at the club. I decided to go down to Hereford for some talks with Graham and was very impressed with what he had to say.

"Graham has got an excellent reputation as a coach and is keen to move the club forward so I can not wait to get started."

An injury hit 2002/03 saw just seventeen starts for the Bucks, but he has reverted to full-time status. "I will be going full-time so hopefully I can avoid injuries and make a place in the first-team my own," he continued. "I maybe haven't started as many games as I would have liked with injuries but I have had a good three years at Telford and hopefully that experience will stand me in good stead now.

"Hereford only just missed out on the play-offs last season and they are determined to have another go this time round so hopefully we can have a successful season."

Williams signs new United deal

Hereford United have confirmed that midfielder Danny Williams will stay with the club.

There was some doubt surrounding the future of the former Chesterfield player, but they have announced this morning that his contract was received in the post and he has agreed to a new deal.

Defender Richard Teesdale is also considering a new contract, but has yet to reveal whether he will stay or not. However, United boss Graham Turner has said that he is hopeful of re-signing the young defender, who joined from Walsall last summer.

United linked with Northwich star

Northwich Victoria's Mark Devlin is the latest player to be linked with a switch to Hereford United.

Reports have suggested that 30-year-old Devlin, who has Football League experience with Exeter City and Stoke City, could switch to Edgar Street on a free transfer after his contract expired with the Cheshire-based club.

The news comes as Northwich boss Jimmy Quinn left the club yesterday to take up the managerial seat at Shrewsbury Town, who were relegated to the Conference this season. It had been thought that Quinn was in talks with former Hereford United striker John Grant about a move to Northwich before he left the club.

Quinn played three matches in attack for Hereford in the 2000/01 season, while Grant featured in Graham Turner's squad last season before his contract expired.

Meanwhile, new website www.hufc-pics.50megs.com has suggested that Hereford United's second pre-season friendly, at Edgar Street against West Bromwich Albion on July 21st, will be 'meaningless'. The game clashes with West Brom's final match of their tour of Denmark, so a combination of reserve and youth-team players is expected at Hereford.

International tournament fails to impress

The Semi-Professional Four Nations tournament held in Wales last week was not organised as well as it could have been and the withdrawal of several players affected the quality of the football.

Of the Hereford players involved, both Michael Rose and Tony James gave good accounts of themselves. Rose played in all three English games and was unlucky not to score against Scotland when he hit the side netting. Many of his crosses were on target and had the English strikers been on better form, several goals could have resulted.

Matt Baker only played in the last game against Scotland and gave a penalty away soon after the start, when he brought down Ian Murray. Afterwards he was equal to anything that came his way and in the second half made two outstanding stops.

Tony James also gave a penalty away against England's Roscoe D'Sane who then scored from the spot. Otherwise his defending was as competent as ever, and he was made captain for the England game but near to the end had to come off as a result of an injury sustaining while defending close to the penalty area. He was on the bench for the last game but did not come on. Wales were a poorer team without him.

Paul Parry seemed under par in his first game against Scotland and was replaced during the second half. However against England he made several good runs and crosses but the conditions were not helpful for him to show his real potential. Against Ireland he did not stand out until switched to the right wing.

It was thought that there would be up to fifth scouts at the Tournament. Both Graham Turner and Richard O'Kelly were at Merthyr on the Thursday evening but it would be surprising if they were that impressed with any of the performances to enquire further. Former Bulls player-manager Phil Robinson, now with Stafford Rangers, was also seen.

It is difficult to understand how the FAW could have picked Merthyr as a venue for the Tournament. The pitch was a disgrace and the organisation awful. The whole place looks run-down and would almost certainly fail to meet Conference standards should the club ever get promoted. Before the game the officials had to break into the PA announcement box and so failed to announce the teams before half-time, let alone play the National Anthems.

The other venues, Carmarthen and Haverfordwest, both had reasonable pitches and the facilities were adequate. Haverfordwest had the better gate as their goalkeeper played in the Welsh squad for that game and the club had even managed to persuade Tesco to take four advertising boards. Every little helps so why no Tesco's boards at Hereford?

Again on the Saturday the FAW were again at fault for scheduling the two games so close together; the game at Carmarthen started at 1pm and at Haverfordwest kick-off was 3.30pm. So fans wanting to see the two games had about forty minutes to drive thirty miles on the A40. Nobody saw the whole of the two games, but an extra fifteen minutes or half an hour would have been sufficient. What a farce.

On the plus side, the refreshments were good value for money!

Next season, England boss Paul Fairclough wants to expand the tournament. If this is the case, the organisation will need to be much better so as not to humiliate ourselves in front of our European neighbours.

Expansion mooted for internation competition

The Four Nations International Tournament, won yesterday by England, could be expanded.

Winning coach Paul Fairclough told the Non-League Paper that he reckoned the tournament, branded a financial success by the FAW, would be strengthened if the likes of Holland, Belgium, Italy and France joined England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales in next year's competition, rumoured to be held by Scotland.

"We have to look to an international tournament over the next couple of seasons and we already hjave interested parties," said Fairclough. "Italy, Holland and Belgium would all like to enter a European Tournament and we now have to work with the Conference to make sure it happens."

Turner convinced by Teesdale

Hereford United manager Graham Turner has said that Richard Teesdale will flourish in his second season with the Bulls.

Teesdale, along with Danny Williams, have agreed to sign new deals and Turner reckons that Teesdale is an able player.

He told the Evening News: "Richard has got some potential and though he only made five starts he never let us down. Hopefully next season he can improve further and feature more prominently."

"Danny's acceptance is in the post but Richard has got an agent and I think he's got to sign it as well. I thought he had a good season for us and I'm pleased he has re-signed."

Of potential new signings, he continued: "I've spoken to a couple of players to date but we're waiting for the list of players to be published in June. There will be a lot of players but the good players will still demand the best wages and market forces will dictate that."

Fairclough's men secure Four Nations title

England, managed by Paul Fairclough, gained the point they needed in the final round of Four Nations matches to pick up the championship as they drew 1-1 with Scotland in Carmarthen.

Hereford United goalkeeper Matt Baker started his first match of the tournament and had a solid game, but his performance was blemished in the ninth minute when he brought down Scottish attacker Ian Murray. The striker, who scored fifty Highland League goals last season, struck home the resultant penalty to give the Scots the advantage. Baker, though, redeemed himself with a superb save from Mike Stephens eleven minutes later, and at the other end, United defender Michael Rose struck a free-kick from twenty-five yards just over the crossbar.

Just three minutes into the second period, Rose found the side netting as he searched for an equaliser, which came on the hour mark. A long clearance from Baker found Barnet's Junior Agogo, who brought the ball down and played in Roscoe D'Sane, the Aldershot attacker, who struck home. The point is enough to crown England as champions.

ENGLAND: Matt Baker (goalkeeper - Hereford United); John Kennedy (Canvey Island); Scott Guyett (captain - Chester City); Jon Boardman (Woking), Lee Johnson, (Yeovil Town); Tristam Whitman (Doncaster Rovers); Michael Rose (Hereford United); Paul Terry (Dagenham & Redbridge); Roscoe D'Sane (Aldershot Town); Junior Agogo (Barnet); Richard Norris (Northwich Victoria). After the 1pm kick-off at Carmarthen, a quick dart up the A40 allowed a ground-hop to Haverfordwest County, where Wales lost 2-0 against Ireland. In a drab match, Jamie Nolan netted both goals towards the end of the first half as the Welsh defence looked to miss Tony James' stabilising effect, as he had to make do with a place on the bench after picking up a hamstring injury in the defeat against England on Thursday.

Mark Rooney charged into the Welsh box on thirty-four minutes and despite the shot being pushed away by goalkeeper Lee Kendall, who was playing on his home ground, Nolan was quick to tap in the rebound. Three minutes later, Nolan turned creator as he split the Welsh defence and struck a decent effort past Kendall to seal the scoreline. The second half was lacklustre, with neither side really taking control, and Paul Parry's performance on the flanks was one of few bright performances for Tomi Morgan's side.

WALES: Lee Kendall (goalkeeper - Haverfordwest County); , Gary Lloyd (captain), Lee Jarman (Barry Town); Paul Parry (Hereford United); Steve Evans (TNS); Ben Davies (Chester City, off, 84 minutes); Graham Evans (Caersws, off, 53 minutes); Mark Dodds (Port Talbot Athletic, off, 75 minutes). Council leader chosen

Roger Phillips, the leader of the Conservatives in Herefordshire, has been confirmed as the new council leader.

The Conservatives have formed an alliance with the Independents, led by former Hereford United director George Hyde, to control the Herefordshire Council, ousting the Liberal Democrats' Terry James from the top position.

It is hoped that Hyde will be instrumental in progressing with the Edgar Street development, and highlighting the football club's situation within it.

James likely to miss final match

Hereford United defender Tony James, who skippered Wales in tonight's match against England, is set to be absent for the final match.

James was brought off with a hamstring niggle with ten minutes of the match remaining, and Welsh coach Tomi Morgan told HU-FC.co.uk: "It is very doubtful that he will be available for the match (on Saturday)."

In the final game of the tournament, Wales play Ireland at Haverfordwest County, kick off 3.30pm, while England face Scotland in a 1pm start at Carmarthen Town.

England set themselves up for title

In front of 711, the biggest attendance of the tournament so far, Wales crashed to a 2-0 defeat to England at Merthyr Tydfil.

Paul Fairclough's men now just need a point in the final game against Scotland on Saturday to secure the championship after tonight's victory on a slippy pitch, not helped by the driving rain that continued to fall throughout proceedings.

Both sides were unchanged from their opening matches, England dominated the opening half and it was down to Tony James' marshalling of the Welsh back-line, he was Welsh captain, that ensured the scoreline was only 1-0 at the break. Darren Way had opened the scoring after sixteen minutes as he fired home from twelve yards after both Kirk Jackson and Terry Skiverton had failed to find the target. Wales' first chance came six minutes from the end of the half, when Chester City's Ben Davies had a twenty-five yard shot pushed around the post.

After the restart, Wales came close to equalising when Graham Evans struck the post from outside the box, and forced Chris Weale into another superb save from long range after sixty-four minutes. Michael Rose played well for England in both his defensive and attacking roles, as did Paul Parry for Wales. He created plenty from the left channel and on occasions came back to defend as the Welsh were pressurised throughout.

England confirmed their victory with sixteen minutes to go when Roscoe D'Sane equalised from the penalty spot, and despite Wales pushing forward, they couldn't break down the English back-line.

ENGLAND: Chris Weale (goalkeeper - Yeovil Town); John Kennedy (Canvey Island); Scott Guyett (captain - Chester City); Terry Skiverton (off, 71 minutes), Lee Johnson, Darren Way (off, 80 minutes), Kirk Jackson (all Yeovil Town); Michael Rose (Hereford United); Stewart Drummond (Morecambe); Lee Elam (Halifax Town); Roscoe D'Sane (Aldershot Town, off, 90 minutes). Subs: Matt Baker (Hereford United); Jon Boardman (Woking); Wayne Hatswell (Chester City, on, 71 minutes); Tristam Whitman (Doncaster Rovers, on 90 minutes); Paul Terry (Dagenham & Redbridge, on, 80 minutes); Junior Agogo (Barnet; Richard Norris (Northwich Victoria).

WALES: Tony Pennock (goalkeeper - Farnborough Town); Lee Phillips, Gary Lloyd (captain) and Lee Jarman (all Barry Town); Tony James (captain, off, 80 minutes), Paul Parry (both Hereford United); Steve Evans (TNS); Ben Davies (Chester City); Peter Smith (Telford United, off 61 minutes); Graham Evans (Caersws); Ricky Evans (Bangor City, off, 61 minutes). Subs: Gary Shepherd, Nathan Davies, Andrew Thomas (on, 80 minutes)(all Newport County); Kevin Evans (Merthyr Tydfil, on, 61 minutes); Bari Morgan; Lee Kendal (Haverfordwest County), Mark Dodds (Port Talbot Athletic, on, 61 minutes).

In the night's other match, Scotland beat Ireland 4-3, and could have made it five had they not missed a penalty. Both sides had a player sent off in the game.

NB - the attendance for the Wales vs Scotland match at Carmarthen Town on Tuesday was 450.

Website renews coach sponsorship

Two agree to sign new deals at Edgar Street

Two Hereford United players have committed to the club for next season.

Midfielder Danny Williams and defender Richard Teesdale have agreed new contracts as Graham Turner aims to boost his squad, report the Hereford Times, but they have yet to put pen to paper. Goalkeeper Ken Griffiths, who was released by the Bulls last month, has joined Exeter City on trial.

A deal as been agreed with Exeter, according to the Express & Echo, and outgoing chairman John Russell said: "He is very well liked and a popular lad. We are preparing to take him on and have given him a letter of intent, then it's up to Gary [Peters, the manager] when he comes back whether he wants to take him on."

Meanwhile, Ludlow Town have revealed that Hereford United will play a pre-season game at the South Shropshire club. The Bulls will celebrate the opening of their new Coors Stadium, although no date has yet been arranged.

Chairman Peter Gwilliam told the Ludlow Advertiser: "Building work is progressing well and the playing surfaces on all the pitches are getting better and better. We are looking are looking forward to coming home to Ludlow after a couple of difficult seasons ground sharing at Bridgnorth and Shifnal. There is a buzz of anticipation and we are looking to develop a team that will put Ludlow on the football map."

James hopes for improvement at Merthyr

After tonight's Four Nations tournament match between Wales and Scotland, Hereford United defender Tony James reckoned that the Welsh side were lucky to steal victory by two goal to one.

He told HU-FC.co.uk: "In the first half, we played some decent football and had quite a few shots on goal. It was a bit scrappy as a game and we were a little bit lucky to pinch a winner.

"It was not bad for a side which has only just got together."

On Thursday, it's the Battle of Britain as England play Wales at Merthyr Tydfil, with Tony James and Paul Parry featuring for the Welsh and Michael Rose and Matt Baker on the side of the English.

James continued: "It will be interesting to see how we do. We should hopefully perform better as a side having got the experience of this match."

England won 4-0 over Ireland this evening and that match could prove crucial. "The goal difference could come into it," the United defender contemplated. "But we'll always give the English a good game."

Bulls happy after first round of games

Tony James and Paul Parry both featured for Wales in tonight's Four Nations tournament opener against Scotland at Carmarthen Town, as they won 2-1.

The hosts opened the lead within two minutes, when Lee Phillips ran to fire home a low ball after a cross from the left channel, and Wales had several chances to extend their advantage before the Scots equalised. Graham Evans's shot went inches wide of the far post after Telford's Peter Smith provided a ball through, but a minute later (22 minutes) Scotland's Ian Murray levelled the scores. The Deveronvale striker, who netted fifty Highland League goals last season, rounded Farnborough stopper Tony Pennock to tap the ball home.

Paul Parry tried his luck on goal on a couple of occasions, but his best effort, a first header, went well wide of the target. The game became heated towards the end of the first half, as tempers boiled, but that was a stark contrast to a relatively dull second period. Scotland had the best of what play there was, but substitute Steven Main wasted the best opening when he found the side netting. At the other end, Scottish 'keeper Andy Shearer had to push over a Graham Evans header, before Paul Parry was removed with fifteen minutes left.

In the last ten minutes, Wales came to life, searching for the winner. Several chances eluded them, including a possible penalty appeal when Ben Davies was fouled, but the referee, Mr. L. Probert of Bridgwater, turned it down. However, a deep cross from Welsh skipper Gary Lloyd in the last minute found Evans, who turned the ball home to collect the points.

WALES: Tony Pennock (goalkeeper - Farnborough Town); Lee Phillips, Gary Lloyd (captain) and Lee Jarman (all Barry Town); Tony James, Paul Parry (off, 75 minutes)(both Hereford United); Steve Evans (TNS); Ben Davies (Chester City); Peter Smith (Telford United); Graham Evans (Caersws, off, 90 minutes); Ricky Evans (Bangor City, off, 65 minutes). Subs: Gary Shepherd (on, 90 minutes), Nathan Davies, Andrew Thomas (all Newport County); Kevin Evans (Merthyr Tydfil, on, 65 minutes); Bari Morgan; Lee Kendal (Haverfordwest County), Mark Dodds (Port Talbot Athletic, on, 75 minutes).

SCOTLAND: Andy Shearer (goalkeeper), Darren Still (both Keith); Ross Archibald (Whitehill Welfare); Steve Dolan (captain, off, 56 minutes), Scott Anderson, Mike McKenzie (off, 50 minutes), Ian Murray (all Deveronvale); Derek Milne (off, 62 minutes), Trevor Fleming, Mike Stephen (all Fraserburgh); Mark Smith (Cove Rangers). Subs: Scott Cantley (Whitehill Welfare); Bobby-John Fairhurst (Wigtown and Bladnock); Paul McGinley (Threave Rovers, on 62 minutes); Steven Main (Fraserburgh, on, 50 minutes); Phil O'Neill (Lothian Thistle, on, 56 minutes); Shawn Scott (Lossiemouth).

In the night's other match at Merthyr Tydfil, England emerged 4-0 victors against Ireland. Hereford's Michael Rose started the game, while goalkeeper Matt Baker had to make do with a place onm the substitute's bench. Aldershot's Roscoe D'Sane put the English ahead after just eleven minutes, and then two goals in five minutes from Yeovil Town's Kirk Jackson game England a 3-0 advantage at the break. Paul Fairclough's men picked up a fourth as Jackson completed his hatrick in front of 322 at Penydarren Park to put them top of the group after one match, and setting-up the England vs Wales match on Thursday as the likely championship decider.

All set for the big kick-off

The Four Nations International Tournament kicks off tomorrow and HU-FC.co.uk will cover the Wales vs Scotland match at Carmarthen as we track the progress of Hereford United's Paul Parry and Tony James.

Both players were in the Welsh squad which won the tournament last season, as a 5-2 win over the Irish Republic at York Street, Boston United, in the final match, handed them the title with seven point over Eire's six. Carmarthen Town manager Tomi Morgan once again manages the Welsh squad, who will be eager to retain the Trophy on home soil.

There were no United players in the England side which finished third, but this season better things are expected. Paul Fairclough has taken over from John Owens at the helm, and selected both Matt Baker and Michael Rose from the Edgar Street ranks.

Rank outsiders are Scotland, who lost all three matches last time and only scored once, but their biggest threat looks to be in attack where Ian Murray, brother of Bristol City's Paul, scored fifty goals for Deveronvale in the Highland League this season. The Irish, under the stewardship of Tony Cousins, could be the surprise package with a youthful squad.

The tournament schedule is as follows:
Tuesday - 7.30pm kick-off
CARMARTHEN TOWN FC - Wales vs Scotland
MERTHYR TYDFIL FC - England vs Eire

Thursday - 7.30pm kick-off
MERTHYR TYDFIL FC - Wales vs England
HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY FC - Eire vs Scotland

Saturday
CARMARTHEN TOWN FC - England vs Scotland (1pm kick-off)
HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY FC - Wales vs Eire (3.30pm kick-off)

HU-FC.co.uk will provide results from all matches, and reports will be filed from Tuesday's Wales match, Thursday's game at Merthyr and both matches on Saturday.

Three ex-United men in Trophy final

Brian McGorry, the former Hereford United midfielder, Graham Turner's son Mark, and Rob Warner, Tamworth's right-back, played in today's FA Trophy final at Villa Park, but were defeated 2-1.

The three were in the United squad relegated from the Football League in 1997, but will return to the Conference as Tamworth were promoted from the Dr. Martens League this year. However, it was Burscough who emerged victorious.

Former Notts County and Telford United attacker Gary Martindale gave the Lancastrians the lead in the first half, and doubled the advantage just after the restart. Tamworth skipper Mark Cooper pulled a goal back with eleven minutes to go, but it was too little too late.

Personal trainer McGorry and Warner started the match, with Turner featuring as a second-half substitute.

The attendance of 14,265 was the fifth lowest for a Trophy final since its inception in 1970.

Two strikers connected with Bulls

Hereford United have now been linked to Telford United attacker David Brown.

Days after Matt Clarke and scout Ron Jukes moved from Edgar Street to the New Bucks Head, out-of-contract Brown is talking to five clubs, with the Bulls thought to be one of them.

The scorer for sixteen goals last season, the twenty-five year old has played for Chester City and Hull City, where he was in the same squad as current United stopper Matt Baker.

Brown told yesterday's Shropshire Star: "I have had contact from five other clubs who have been interested in signing me. There is other interest but my main aim is to stop at Telford."

However, new boss Mick Brown will speak to players in the next couple of days to resolve their futures.

The Non-League Paper also reports today that Hereford United have made an enquiry over the availability of Chester City attacker Dave Cameron, who is looking to move away from the Deva Stadium.

The same publication also suggests that over fifty scouts are expected at the Four Nations tournament in south and west Wales this week. The games kick-off on Tuesday, and HU-FC.co.uk aims to provide coverage of all matches involving the Hereford United players in the England and Wales squads.

Your website needs YOU!

Are you going to the Four Nations International matches? HU-FC.co.uk are looking for people to provide a short report from the England vs Ireland match at Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday, and also the Saturday games (I will be attending at least one). Any interested parties should contact terrygoodwin@hu-fc.co.uk for more details.

The website is in the final stages of being updated with the 2002/03 season information, and will be online soon. To cover running costs, we are looking for new advertisers for the 2003/04 season, as I am not in a position to continue covering the hosting and other costs that it incurs. Many thanks to this season's sponsors: Chelgames, the Hereford United Lottery, and Humberts Chartered Surveyors; long may your support continue.

For 2003/04, HU-FC.co.uk intends to continue covering the Bulls in the depth that you have become accustomed. However, organicbull and I cannot do this without the support of others. Over the past year, BrianBull has run the predictions league, while Huw Williams has provided interesting articles too. Many thanks to them, and also the likes of John Perkins, Tim Ward, Jon Hale and Peter Povall, who have also provided assistance. If you have any ideas, suggestions or contributions, please email me at terrygoodwin@hu-fc.co.uk - and many thanks for your support since our launch in 1999.

Parry looks for successful season

Hereford United midfielder Paul Parry is confident for his personal future, and also that of the club.

He reckons that Hereford United can push for promotion next term, and also that his Wales squad can retain the Four Nations championship in next week's tournament.

Speaking to the Evening News, he said: "The main thing is that I wanted to do better than last year when we were fighting relegation. The whole season was a highlight really because we did a lot better than people expected although it was a little disappointing at the end. I thought we were unlucky against Wigan in the FA Cup and it was amazing to think that we were just denied in the final minute against the Division Two leaders.

"From a personal point of view I was pleased with my goals haul of 12 because my previous best was six though I was playing up front a fair bit."

Parry is set to become a father in five weeks time, but feels that the time off should be shorter.

"I would rather the summer break was shorter to be honest because it gets a bit boring after a few weeks and I can't wait to get going again," he added.

He will be kept occupied, though, by the international tournament next week with Parry and Tony James facing the England duo of Matt Baker and Michael Rose as the Hereford dressing room is split.

"I'd love to win the Four Nations again but I'm sure there will be a fair bit of competition between the Hereford lads," said Parry.

Turner talks players

Graham Turner gave a long interview to Trevor Owens, Sports Editor of BBC Hereford and Worcester this morning. Some of the highlights are printed below.

Turner started by reviewing the current player situation. "At the end of the season we offered contracts to the majority of those players whose contracts had expired," he said. "The exceptions were John Grant, Ian Wright and also Ken Griffiths, the young goalkeeper. Of the ones we offered contracts to, Matt Clarke has since departed despite agreeing with us initially, but before we got pen to paper he decided he was going off elsewhere.

"We are still waiting for Richard Teesdale to actually sign his contract. All the formalities have got to take place but we have agreed everything and Danny Williams, who has just come back from holidays and I expect him to sign before the end of the week."

Talking about the loss of Matt Clarke, Turner continued: "That's how it goes. On the Monday after the season had finished I spoke to him, made him an offer which was a little bit less than he had been on and he was quite happy to accept it and the format was going to be that we had all the contracts typed out, not only his but including three or four others, and we took them to Gloucester University where we had some fitness tests and they were going to put pen to paper but Matt went missing. Eventually I found out, when he did speak to me that he was going to Burton. I had a few days off and when I came back I was quite surprised to see that he had signed for Telford. These things happen in football. Matt Clarke's gone. He was a decent player for a few years here. We have got to get a better one now.Q

Trevor Owens then turned the conversation to scout Ron Jukes, and suggested that with Jukes moving to Telford "would I be openly cynical if I put two and two together and made four?"

Turner replied "It's not like you to be cynical Trev; that's my job!"

The interview moved to Albano Correia. Turner said that he had spoke to his agent. "Albano is a difficult case. You look at him sometimes. He got a tremendous goal at Southport and put a couple more in. What we want to do now is wait for the lists to come in. I want to sign a couple of strikers. I have already seen one and talked to him and made him an offer. I want to sign an experienced mid-field player, young goalkeeper, and a right-back. And then if anything extra special comes up, we would like to extend the squad to accomodate them. We don't want to turn anybody down. Those are the priorities and that's what we are working on. I don't want to jump in too early just in case better players come on the scene. I think there are going to be massive clear-outs at some of the league clubs. I think a lot of them are in financial difficulties and the only way they are going to sort themselves out is to reduce the wage bill. So I expect a number of players to be available that could be quite attractive to us. Whether we can convince them to come here remains to be seen. I want to take stock on what might be available and that includes Albano.

"I have spoken to half a dozen players already and I have met one and made an offer and I am waiting for an answer which should be this weekend.

Baker gains late England chance

An injury to Chester City goalkeeper Wayne Brown means Matt Baker will travel to South Wales for the Four Nations Tournament with England.

The Hereford United stopper is likely to be reserve, behind Yeovil number one Chris Weale, as Paul Fairclough makes a couple of changes to the English squad.

Baker will partner Hereford defender Michael Rose in the squad, with both Paul Parry and Tony James featuring for Wales. The two sides meet in Merthyr a week tomorrow, with the tournament kicking off next Tuesday with Wales playing Scotland at Carmarthen Town and the Irish Republic facing England in Merthyr.

HU-FC.co.uk will provide reports from most of the matches, but I can't be in two places at once. If you are going to any of the games and would like to help us out, please email me at terrygoodwin@hu-fc.co.uk.

Philips to replace James

BBC Hereford and Worcester have reported that Roger Philips, head of the Conservative group on Herefordshire Council, is likely to become their new leader replacing Liberal Terry James.

It appears that Philips has done a deal with the Independent group, headed by ex-Bulls director George Hyde, to run the council.

Asked about plans for the Edgar Street area, Philips said: "The developement of Edgar Street was not totally reliant on council money. What we are waiting for is the result of the consultant's feasibility study of what is viable and can be delivered."

Bulls hope to sign midfielder

Danny Williams was set to meet Graham Turner today to discuss a new deal at Hereford United.

The former Chesterfield midfielder was thought to be seeking alternative clubs, but could commit himself to the Bulls for another year.

Turner will have more work on his plate after the departure of scout Ron Jukes, though, as he and coach Richard O'Kelly will take over scouting duties at the club.

Meanwhile, newly-relegated Exeter City are set to have their finances investigated by the FA after irregularities occurred. Chairman John Russell, board member Mike Lewis and his wife have been arrested.

Jukes and Hyde resign

Both Ron Jukes and George Hyde have resigned as Directors of Hereford United, reports the official site. The resignation of George Hyde wasn't entirely unexpected since his election to Herefordshire council two weeks ago.

In an article published last month, HU-FC.co.uk suggested that this could happen as it would be difficult for Hyde to speak on matters involving the Edgar Street proposals and continue as a director of Hereford United. As a free agent it is hoped that Hyde can keep the interest of the club in mind when discussing anything connected with the future of the club.

The resignations also give the club the chance of bringing new blood onto the board. Obviously it is to be hoped that this might include someone with enough financial clout to be able to invest in the club. But even if anyone who joins is unable to invest at this time, help to finish with the CVA should be a priority.

Meanwhile Carillion have confirmed to HU-FC.co.uk that the transfer of Chelverton's interest in Chelverton Properties has been finalised. This means that Formsole, to whom Hereford United owe £1m, is now owned by Carillion and Richardson Developements.

It is understood that discussions will take place with the club about the repayment of the loan and Carillion, when asked about any possible changes to the loan terms, did not want to comment as "we do not wish to prejudice these discussions by speculating the outcome".

"Carillion and Richardson could be said to have provided considerable financial support to the club, in so far as interest on the loan and rent has not been paid by the club," said a spokesman for Carillion. "At the end of the day we must balance the interests the interests of the club with those of our shareholders."

As regards the timing of any activity in the Edgar Street area, Carillion have stated that until the consultants, DTZ, have consider all options, nothing is likely to happen.

Ron Jukes is so important

In today's Shropshire Star, incoming Telford boss Mick Jones has admitted the chance to work alongside new chief scout Ron Jukes convinced him to move back into football management.

Jones has been a long-time friend and admirer of the work of former Shrewsbury, Hereford, Wolves, Walsall and Derby scout Jukes and can't wait for the chance to work alongside the knowledgeable veteran next season.

Jones said: "There is no mystery about me and Ron working together. We have come to know each other over the years through lots of telephone conversations. I have advised him about players and he has been doing the same for me and we have become close. He is an excellent scout and that is what I wanted here. Ron and I have a super association and I am sure we will work well together.

"I am not saying I would not have taken the job if Ron wasn't involved but I would have questioned if I wanted it without him there.."

Jukes is certainly well-respected throughout football. Forty years of scouting have inevitably produced a number of high-class contacts and the fact he has unearthed players such as Steve Bull at Wolves and Nigel Pearson at Shrewsbury to name but two of his many finds prove what Jukes still has to offer. The former Hereford scout admits he is looking forward to the challenge of passing on his years of experience to another club.

He said: "I have never lost my love for football but I felt I needed a fresh challenge after five years at Hereford. I am getting no younger and to have the chance to be part of a team at an ambitious club like Telford is superb."

Jukes will be in charge of a network of scouts at the New Bucks Head.

Purdie agrees new deal

Hereford United have confirmed that Rob Purdie will stay at the club for next season.

It is thought that the midfielder has signed a one-year full-time contract, and boosts the number of players in the squad to ten, without Graham Turner bringing in any new faces as yet.

One of those who left was Matt Clarke, who signed for Telford United last week, but Hereford United have said that he shook on a new deal on Monday 29th April. A statement on the club's official website reads: "at no time did he ask to go part-time or in fact ask if we would match an offer from another club."

Meanwhile, almost £2,500 was raised from the Football marathon held at Edgar Street last weekend.

Jukes goes to Telford

Former Shrewsbury, Walsall and Wolves scout Ron Jukes has been at Hereford for the last five years but revealed he had left Edgar Street because of the exciting potential of Telford, reports the Shropshire Star.

He said: "This is another Rushden & Diamonds and it might even be better than that. I was invited to come along and I said yes, it is as simple as that.

"The distance to Hereford was getting a bit too much and I'm really glad to be here. It should be a very exciting time for the club."

Andy Shaw, chairman of Telford, has had a busy day as former Brunei manager Mick Jones takes over as boss at the New Bucks Head. He said of Jukes, who joins the club as a chief scout and director: "Ron is somebody I have always admired and I have mentioned to the board over the last two years that I would like to get him on board in some capacity.

"To be honest I was not sure he would join us but I have been speaking to him over the last few days and was delighted that he wanted to come forward.

"He knows the game inside out and it is a great appointment for the club. He might not always get it right but he will give 110 per cent and more and I am sure he will work well with Mick (Jones)."

Mick Jones talked about Ron Jukes on BBC Radio Shropshire. He said " one of the conditions (I came as manager) was that Jukes was on board as part of the team because Ron and I have been close colleagues for a lot of years now and he is going to be vital to the rebuilding plans because we have only got one player at the moment so Ron has got a lot of work to do."

"There is a list of players, Ron and I have sat down and talked about that" including last seasons players" because Ron and I know about them."

Ron Jukes resigns

According to today's Sports Argus, Ron Jukes has resigned as Hereford United's chief scout and also as a director of the club.

Jukes, who lives in Walsall, is 75 years old next month and has been a director since Graham Turner became chairman.

It is believed that he was the third paid director although his remuneration was very small.

The effects of wage-capping

The news that the Nationwide Conference is to introduce wage-capping will probably have an effect on the budget of Hereford United, should it be ratified.

The Non-League Paper have reported the story, but it appears that no percentage of income or set rate has yet been decided.

The Football League are testing out a similar system, and a report from their website on 25th April 2003 read: A further move towards good governance was made with unanimous backing from Division Three clubs for a trial of a salary cost management protocol to come into force next season. Under the scheme, clubs will commit to spending no more than 75% of their total income on employee salaries wages, including no more than 60% on their players.

During the trial period there will be no sanctions for clubs that exceed the limits and clubs from other divisions may participate if they wish.

Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinny commented on the move: "The second, very significant decision which has been made today is that we've all committed to an experimental protocol, in the first instance for Third Division clubs, which will relate wages to club income, not just for players but also for all employees. There will be a 60% limit for players and a 75% limit for all other staff. I have discussed this with Gordon Taylor and he is broadly supportive of what we've been trying to achieve. Clubs in the First and Second Division will be able to take part in that if they wish to. Otherwise we will set indicative personal club standards for the year for each of them."

In terms of Hereford United, the most recent accounts available are from 2000/01 season. In that year, the total income was £551,948, with staff costs amounting to £506,675. Of that, the players earned around £413,000. This equates to just under 75% which may be considered too high should similar proposals be introduced into the Conference.

The income at United can vary depending on broadcasting fees and extra gate income from a successful FA Cup run. Whether the league will use the previous season's figures as a base is uncertain but seems the most likely way. A fairer way might be to average income over three years.

With talk of lower wages for players at Hereford, it looks as though Graham Turner may be trying to put his house in order before any new rules are introduced.

Financial constraints imposed on clubs' budgets

"Squad budgeting" has been introduced into the Conference, as a means of wage-capping.

The move has yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be at next month's Conference meeting in Blackpool.

It will include a fixed amount plus an percentage of a club's income, report the Non-League Paper, and those that fail to apply the rules could have points deducted.

Meanwhile, the fight for twenty-four clubs in the Conference next season goes on with more meetings between executives and the Football Association, while Kettering Town have joined the Ryman League as the Dr. Martens Premier Division is full for next season.

Rovers gain Football League place

Doncaster Rovers have gained promotion to Division Three after a nail-biting Conference Promotion final match today.

Stoke City's Brittania Stadium was the setting for the game, which saw Dave Penney's men emerge 3-2 golden-goal victors over Dagenham & Redbridge.

Goals from Paul Green and Dave Morley put Donny 2-0 up, but the Daggers forced extra time with Mark Stein and Tarkan Mustafa replying in the second period. Five minutes into the second period of extra time, a close range effort from Francis Tierney put Rovers back into the Football League after a five year absence.

13,092 turned up for the game, which completes the Conference line-up for next season.

United hope to make signings soon

Hereford United's first summer signing is expected within the next couple of weeks.

Manager Graham Turner is known to be chasing a midfielder and attacker, but will also require support in defence after Matt Clarke joined Telford United and Ian Wright switched to Burton Albion. A new goalkeeper is also a priority after Ken Griffiths was released, leaving no back-up or pressure on Matt Baker.

It is thought that despite rejecting a move to the club before the transfer deadline, Barrington Belgrave may consider a switch to Edgar Street. The former Yeovil Town striker, who followed manager Dave Webb to Roots Hall, was released by the club this week.

Meanwhile, former Hereford United player Nigel Vaughan has ruled himself out of the vacant managerial seat at Shrewsbury Town. The youth team coach at the Gay Meadow said that he didn't want the job. Also, on Sunday, ex-Hereford physiotherapist Simon Shakeshaft will hold a charity game at his current club, Shrewsbury, against a fictional team! Shrewsbury Town Old Boys XI and Sky One's Harchester United meet in the match to raise money for testicular cancer charities. Hereford United chairman Graham Turner will appear on the pitch at the match, as he is widely recognised as the Shrews' most successful-ever manager. The game will kick-off at 11am at Gay Meadow with fans paying on the gate - prices are £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

Rose to go to Four Nations bash

Michael Rose will join Paul Parry and Tony James at the Four Nations semi-professional tournament after he was called up to the final eighteen squad.

Paul Fairclough, manager of the English side, named Rose at left-back as he bids to win the title for the first time. Parry and James will feature for the holders, Wales.

Fairclough said: "I am extremely happy with this squad. It is well balanced, contains a blend of youth and experience, pace, power and creativity and it contains half a dozen ‘multi-functional’ players who provide the squad with an adaptability needed in a tournament like this."

Matt Baker, the United goalkeeper, missed out as Chester's Wayne Brown and Yeovil's Chris Weale were selected ahead of him.

Fairclough was eager to play down England's chances: "Wales won the tournament last year, and with home support, will doubtless start as favourites.

"Although Wales have not selected Kevin Gall of Yeovil Town, who had a fine end to the season, Graham Evans showed that he is extremely dangerous in last year’s tournament and has again had a strong season in the Welsh Premier.

"Ireland this year may be slightly weaker with a squad deprived of more experienced players due to the Irish League having only recently re-started, but they will still be a strong side again looking to impress.

"Scotland, meanwhile, will be sure to improve on last year, when they had very little preparation time and will be keen to get some points on the board this year."

The England squad in full is:
1 - Wayne Brown - Chester City
2 - John Kennedy - Canvey Island
3 - Scott Guyett - Chester City
4 - Terry Skiverton - Yeovil Town
5 - Danny Collins - Chester City
6 - Wayne Hatswell - Chester City
7 - Michael Rose - Hereford United
8 - Nick Crittenden - Yeovil Town
9 - Lee Johnson - Yeovil Town
10 - Darren Way - Yeovil Town
11 - Stewart Drummond - Morecambe
12 - Paul Terry - Dagenham & Redbridge
13 - Chris Weale - Yeovil Town
14 - Lee Elam - Morecambe
15 - Kirk Jackson - Yeovil Town
16 - Roscoe d' Sane - Aldershot
17 - Junior Agogo - Barnet
18 - Scott Rickards - Tamworth

Clarke reacts to Telford switch

Matt Clarke has spoken for the first time since his move to Telford United.

The right-back, who signed a two-year deal at Bucks Head after rejecting contracts with both Burton Albion and Hereford United, was sorry to leave Edgar Street.

He told the Hereford Times: "I was offered a new contract by Hereford but it would have involved a substantial drop in my wages, and I could not afford to take it.

"I have been linked with other clubs, but I met the chairman of Telford, heard how ambition he was, and he offered me a much better deal and more security than Hereford - which I would have been daft to refuse.''

He added: "I am aware that there have been rumours of me opening a night club and wanting to go part-time, but they are all ridiculous. Had the deal been right I would have stayed at Hereford. The fans have been brilliant to me at Hereford and I doubt whether I will ever have a better relationship with another set of supporters.

"I am very disappointed to be leaving."

The paper, though, confirms that Jamie Pitman, Ben Smith and Steve Guinan have each signed new one-year deals with United, while Rob Purdie, Richard Teesdale and Danny Williams are close to re-signing.

On the friendly front, Graham Turner has arranged pre-season matches with two of the Midlands' leading sides. Wolves will visit Edgar Street on July 14th, with West Bromwich Albion making the trip to Hereford a week later.

Clarke move to Telford settled

Matt Clarke's move from Hereford United to Telford United on a free transfer has been confirmed today.

Telford chairman Andy Shaw wrapped up the move, and told the Shropshire Star: "I did all the dealings with him on Monday and we've signed and sealed it today. He comes highly recommended as the best right back in the league.

"We've very proud to have got him because a lot of big clubs were chasing him. He hasn't come cheap but if we are going to do what I keep saying we want to do then he is exactly the calibre of player we need to bring in."

Report suggests Clarke switches to Bucks

Reports have said that Matt Clarke has snubbed Burton Albion and Hereford United to join Conference rivals Telford United - on full-time terms.

The news has yet to be confirmed but it is thought that managerless Telford orchestrated the move through their chairman, Andy Shaw.

Brewers boss Nigel Clough told the Burton Mail: "I'm not quite sure who signed Matt because Telford haven't got a manager at the moment, but I appreciate they can offer him full-time football and we can't.

Ian Wright, though, will sign a one-year deal at Eton Park this week.

"We're delighted to have Ian on board," said Clough. "He has been an integral part of the success Hereford have enjoyed in having one of the best defensive records over the last four or five seasons."

However, the Bulls have been linked to Steve Palmer, the Telford captain this season who is out-of-contract. Age twenty-six, the midfielder is known to have interest from other clubs and has yet to commit himself to the Bucks Head-based side.

This season, Palmer has scored twice in thirty-three league matches but 133 games since 1997/98, scoring 23 Conference goals, suggests he may be ready for a move.

Play-off final line-up revealed

It couldn't have been any closer in the two Nationwide Conference play-off semi finals, as Chester City and Doncaster Rovers drew 1-1, 2-2 on aggregate, while Dagenham & Redbridge lost 2-1 at Morecambe to draw 3-3 on aggregate.

Both matches went to penalties, with Doncaster winning 4-3 after Chester's fifth penalty, taken by Dave Cameron, was saved by Andy Warrington in the Rovers goal. At Christie Park, Tarkan Mustafa scored Dagenham's fifth spot kick, and Jamie Murphy's kick was saved by Tony Roberts to put Dagenham through 3-2 at the end.

The two sides meet in the Promotion final at Stoke City's Brittania Stadium on Saturday to play for a place in the Football League.

Grecians drop but lifeline for Boro' and 'Port?

Exeter City joined the Nationwide Conference yesterday after being relegated from Division Three.

They won 1-0 against Southend United but Swansea, 4-2 victors at the Vetch over Hull City, stay up.

Meanwhile, Chelmsford Town are set to move into the Ryman League for next season to allow both Nuneaton Borough and Kettering Town to join the Dr. Martens Premier Division.

Also, the Conference are still pushing the FA for a twenty-four team league next season. They have asked for a meeting at Soho Square, and if successful, would mean a reprieve for relegated Nuneaton and Southport.

Burton still in Clarke talks

Burton Albion have confirmed that they are still in contract negotiations with Hereford United's Matt Clarke.

Clarke was scheduled to come to Hereford to see manager Graham Turner but never showed, according to BBC Hereford & Worcester, and this has stalled negotiations between player and club.

Turner, though, aims to bring in two major signings this summer, as well as other players to fill in the gaps. "Obviously we are looking for a goalscorer and experienced midfielder but it's very easy to say what we want when getting them is a different matter," he told the Evening News. "If we can make the right signings though I think we can be a force in the Conference next season."

Of Albano Correia, Turner continued: "I've got an open mind on Albano but he popped in three goals for us and I would like to see a bit more of him. His agent is in Portugal at the moment but we will speak at some point."

Midfielder thinking over new deal

It has been reported that Danny Williams is considering offers to move away from Edgar Street.

The midfielder signed from Chesterfield last summer has been offered a new contract by Graham Turner but is keeping his options open before committing to another season with Hereford.

Meanwhile, two former Hereford United players have been linked with the managerial job at Telford United.

Steve Bull, the ex-Wolves star who did some coaching which at Edgar Street, has applied, as has former Mansfield Town coach Stuart Watkiss, who played at United in the 1995/96 season.

Bull told the Shropshire Star: "I would love to be in charge of an ambitious club and with Telford returning to full-time next season, that's fits the bill perfectly."

Turner hints at Clarke exit

Matt Clarke is likely to join Burton Albion on a part-time basis.

Graham Turner has told ClubCall that Clarke has not yet signed a new deal at Hereford United and looks set to switch to Burton.

He may be joined at Eton Park by United skipper Ian Wright, who was released last week but thought to be considering moves to other clubs in the Dr. Martens Premier too.

However, there is some good news coming out of Edgar Street. Jamie Pitman, Steve Guinan and Ben Smith have all reportedly signed new deals with the club.

Tories come out top in council elections

The Herefordshire Council Election results are as follows:

Conservative Party - 21 seats
Liberal Democrat Party - 17
Independent - 16
Labour Party - 4
UK Independence Party - 0
Green Party - 0
Totals - 58

Two seats were uncontested.

Former HUISA chairman Kevin Wargen polled 808 votes in the Belmont seat for the Liberal Democrats, but came fifth and wasn't elected. George Hyde, a Hereford United director, was elected though, winning 1305 votes in the Tupsley seat. Terry James, the Liberal Democrat council leader, was also re-elected in the Kington area.

Wright set for Burton move

Hereford United's released captain Ian Wright could join Burton Albion on a part-time basis, along with out-of-contract defender Matt Clarke.

Both were apparently seen at Eton Park meeting manager Nigel Clough and a switch to the Conference rivals is on the cards for Wright, who lives in the Birmingham area and is thought to be switching to a semi-professional basis. The Burton Mail reports that Clough is targeting both of them, along with Morecambe defender Lee Colkin.

However, it is unlikely that Matt Clarke would leave, having agreed a new deal with Graham Turner which should be completed tomorrow. Losing Clarke, though, would be a major knock for Hereford, as he has been a mainstay in a strong defensive unit this season.
