Preview: Bulls vs Walsall

The Bulls entertain Walsall in a League One match on Saturday at Edgar Street.

The Bulls have not beaten the Saddlers since an FA Cup tie in January 1990, when the Bulls ran out 2-1 winners to set up a lucrative match with Man Utd, and have to go back to 1977 for the last League victory. Since the FA Cup win the Bulls have managed only five draws from the next twelve games with the most notable a 3-3 draw at the Bescot in 1993, when Chris Fry, Derek Hall, and David Morris - with his only goal for the Bulls - earned the Bulls a point.

The Bulls come into the game after a creditable defensive performance against Leeds. Since the 6-1 battering at the hands of Bristol Rovers, the defence has only leaked on average a goal a game. Goals at the other end remain a problem with only Leyton Orient having scored less this season, but continued impressive performances from Matt Done and Bradley Hudson-Odoi should reap rewards sooner rather than later.

Walsall fans weren't the happiest bunch about their last visit to Edgar Street, but they did seem to enjoy it. Jimmy Mullen was seen as the budget choice as manager, and his tactics did little to win support, when he replaced Richard Money last season but the current form, based on a solid defence, even had the Saddlers faithful singing his name last weekend. Battering ram striker Jabo Ibehre is joint top scorer with just three goals alongside youngster Ishmel Demontagnac, who hit a hat-trick against Southend and has started only one of four games since.
