Roy Williams 1932-2011

It has been announced that former Bulls player Roy Williams has died at the age of 79.

The Inside Forward scored 154 goals in 357 games for the Bulls during two post-war spells until 1963. Bulls historian Ron Parrott has provided us with this profile:

"Roy started on the football ladder with Lads Club and played for local works side Thynnes Athletic before joining the United ground staff in 1948/49. He was a key player in the Hereford side when he wasn't serving away from home in the RAF and when he returned to Edgar Street in 1952/53, he was snapped up by Southampton for £4,000.

He spent two seasons in the limelight at the Dell before returning to Hereford in 1955. Roy then remained at Edgar Street until 1963. A great club man, he scored 154 goals in 357 games and could always be relied upon to give 100 percent. In his two years at the Dell, he played 44 games and scored seven goals.

Roy also captained local rivals Worcester City. His son Mark was an apprentice with Arsenal and later played for Newport County and Westfields before managing Pegasus Juniors."

Ron also offered his own memories, saying: "It's very sad news, he was one of my schoolboy heroes and always wore the white shirt of Hereford United with pride!"
