Green hopes for Conference return

In an interview with Radio Hereford FC, the Bulls defender Ryan Green has revealed his dream is to end his career at Edgar Street after helping the club regain Conference status.

Now in his 9th season with the club he maintains he will be back in contention for a place in the side for the upcoming FA Cup tie against Godalming on Saturday after an Achilles injury.

Green explained, "The cortisone injection was very painful but it was successful and I'm going to train on Thursday, and hopefully be fit for the cup-tie at the weekend".

"I'd like to feel I could keep playing until I'm 40, but first-things-first, I'm in my ninth season with the club, and my aim is to take that forward into a tenth season".

Looking further ahead the former Welsh international insisted, "I know it's a dream, but I'd like to help this club get back into the Conference where I started my career with Hereford."

Hereford 1 - Merthyr Town 1

In Monday's bank holiday derby at Edgar Street, Pete Beadle was forced into making one change to the side that picked up three points at St Neots on Saturday. Mark Preece had recovered from his illness to replace the injured Dan Preston in the heart of defence.

Keyon Reffell lined up against his former club, winning the first corner of the afternoon in the fourth minute, but James Bowen's delivery was an easy catch for Oliver Davies.

Davies, who had been greeted with a less than a warm welcome by the Meadow End, failed to catch James Bowen's cross, but the Martyrs' defence cleared the ball ahead of John Mills at the far post.

As the hosts kept up the pressure, Mills saw a snapshot from 25-yards whistle wide of the target.

James Bowen was inches away from taking the lead moments later, as his corner came close to sneaking in at the back post, but as the ball was half-cleared as far as Keyon Reffell, the effort was blazed wide.

With 27 minutes on the clock, Merthyr registered their first shot on target. Ex-Bull Stuart Fleetwood's cross was played back across goal by Jimmy Oates into the path of Cory Jenkins, but Dara O'Shea did well to block the powerful effort.

Martin Horsell was then called into action in the 34th minute, Jarrad Wright latched onto the end of Eliot Richards' corner, but Horsell claimed the diving header.

In the moments leading up to half time, Merthyr began to find their feet in the game, limiting Hereford's chances, but a blatant handball in the box by Scott Tancock wasn't spotted by the officials, with Bulls fans fuming as a free kick was then given against John Mills.

HT: Hereford 0 - Merthyr Town 0

A slow, scrappy start to the second half saw little in the way of goalmouth action. It wasn't until the 57th minute when the Bulls properly tested Oliver Davies. Eliot Richards was booked for a late challenge on Keyon Reffell, but O'Shea's header was straight at the keeper from the resulting free kick.

In the 65th minute, substitute Kyle Copp broke the deadlock for the Martyrs. Mike McGrath conceded a free kick 35-yards out, with Copp able to curl his shot around the four-man wall and beat Martin Horsell at the near-post.

After taking the lead, Merthyr were reduced to ten-men after Eliot Richard picked up his second yellow for throwing the ball away after Hereford were awarded a free kick.

In the 79th minute, Pablo Haysham was dispossessed in the box after Rob Purdie found him with a neat through ball. Keyon Reffell then did well to get onto the end of the loose ball, but his low drive was an easy save for Davies.

Hereford finally pulled a goal back six minutes from time. After doing well to control an accurate long ball, Gethyn Hill turned and got a shot away, firing diagonally into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Despite pushing for a second goal, Hereford found it hard to break down a heavily-defensive Merthyr side.

Bank Holiday Southern Prem Round-Up

A round up of yesterday's games in the Southern Premier League written by Steve Whitney.

Banbury United and Kettering Town both maintained their 100 per cent starts to the new Evo-Stik League South Premier season by earning back-to-back Bank Holiday victories on Monday.

Banbury dominated their game at Creasey Park against a Dunstable Town side who had only one point from their opening four games ahead of kick-off.

However, it wasn`t until the 37th minute that experienced striker Jefferson Louis managed to break the deadlock.

Nine minutes after the break, Tom Winters added a second and then Darren Pond after 71 minutes, Conor McDonagh 3 minutes later and then Pond again 8 minutes from time made it a nap hand for the Puritans.
The Poppies attracted a crowd of 727 for their Latimer Park contest against St Neots Town, who have also yet to win this season to date.
Two goals in 3 minutes from Ben Milnes (16 minutes) and a Rhys Hoenes penalty put the hosts in command.
Rene Howe added a third in the 33rd minute, and that`s how the scoreline remained.
King`s Lynn Town, Merthyr Town and Stratford Town are also yet to taste defeat this term to date.
The Linnets won 3-1 at St Ives Town, thanks to a brace from Tom Siddons in the 77th and 84th minutes and a third 3 minutes into stoppage time from Harry Whayman – and all after Jimmy Hartley had given the Saints a 58th minute lead.

The Martyrs held promoted Hereford FC to a 1-1 Edgar Street draw in front of a massive crowd of 3,366.
It seemed to give the visitors a boost as Kyle Copp broke the deadlock to give them a 66th minute lead.
But Welshman Gethyn Hill rescued a point for the Bulls 6 minutes from time.

Stratford shared the spoils for the fourth time in five games – this time a 0-0 draw at home to a Redditch United side who had hit four 48 hours earlier.
Joining Dunstable and St Neots in still searching for that elusive first win are Gosport Borough and Bishop`s Stortford.
Gosport were humiliated 8-0 AT HOME by Basingstoke Town with former striker Ben Wright netting twice.
Sam Smart and Jack McKnight also bagged braces with a Ed Sanders own goal completing the rout.
Bishop`s Stortford at least picked up their first point from a 0-0 home draw with Biggleswade Town.
Hitchin Town put their first win on the board, 1-0 at Top Field in front of 513 against promoted Royston Town.
Callum Donnelly`s 35th minute effort eventually proved to be the Canaries` winner.
There was also only one goal at Frome Town where visiting Tiverton Town claimed the spoils, courtesy of a 10th minute Jamie Price goal.
One goal was enough as well for Chesham United at the Meadow against Kings Langley – but they left it late, with Callum Bunting`s winner coming in the 88th minute.
A crowd of 1,505 saw Weymouth earn local bragging rights at the Avenue Stadium against neighbours Dorchester Town.
Brandon Goodship gave the visitors the lead on 26 minutes.
Jake McCarthy doubled the Terras’ lead 2 minutes after half-time.
Dorchester’s situation became even worse when Tom Blair was sent-off for a stamp on Ashley Wells on 53 minutes, before McCarthy wrapped up the points with a third 6 minutes afterwards.
Slough Town won 2-1 at Cherrywood Road against promoted Farnborough.
Matt Lench`s 11th minute goal for the visitors was eventually cancelled out by Perry Coles with just 10 minutes left to play.
But 2 minutes into stoppage time, Chris Flood grabbed the Rebels winner.

Hill Scores On His Home Debut

Hill Celebrates His Goal
On loan striker Gethin Hill made his home debut for Hereford yesterday in front of a gate of 3366.

Afterwards he spoke to Keith Hall for BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"To score on my debut at home was brilliant," said Hill.

"They didn't have many shots on goal, maybe just the free-kick which went in.

"We should have gone on and scored a second or a first earlier.

"It was a brilliant pass from Jimmy Oates, it just dropped and svilled and straight in.

"They are a good team with good players. They always do well in this league but I feel we should have got more from the game.

"I think we can go on and do well.

"There were not too many heavy fouls going in, people trying to win over the referee at times but you are going to get that. The referee didn't do too bad to be fair.

"I think we can do a lot better. Today wasn't the greatest performance all round.

"They went a man down but we couldn't get that second chance.

"My fitness levels are coming. Today I felt a lot better. Two games in three days is always going to be tough but I got through the ninety minutes.

"Hopefully now get involved for Saturday in the FA Cup. If I can that will be brilliant."

Hill's loan deal is, at present, just for a month.

"I'd like to see how it goes. I'm enjoying being here, training is really good.

"I want to push on and play at as high a level as possible. I'm not sure, we'll see how it goes.

"First time I've really played a league game like this in front of a crowd like this. Everything I expected. They got behind us when we were 1-0 down."

Green Hopes To Be Back For Saturday

Hereford defender Ryan Green is hopeful to be back in contention for a start in the FA Cup tie next Saturday.

"I had my injection on Friday," Green told BN.

"At the moment it is all good, the pain has gone from my achilles so that's a good sign and I'll try running on Thursday.

"Then, hopefully, be involved on Saturday. That's the plan at the moment.

"Apparantly the injection will last for a year or two.

"I'm not getting any younger so I might have another one next year.

"I went to the Nuffield in Hereford. Jonny the physio sorted it out with Darren Clark, the Orthopedic Surgeon.

"Painful, but it's done the job."

Green spent a spell at Merthyr before returning to Hereford.

"I would have liked to be fit for this game but the doctor said you could play but there is a chance I could have ruptured my achilles.

"Even at 20 years old there isn't much coming back from that. Best not to. Do it properly and be back next week."
