Preview: Hereford vs Redditch United

Hereford entertain Redditch United at Edgar Street tomorrow (Monday) and will be hoping to get back to winning ways after a disappointing goalless draw at Merthyr on Boxing Day.

The Reds currently lie 15th in the table and are without a win in the league since mid-November. New manager Tim Harris, who quit Gloucester City, lost his first game in charge on Tuesday as Stratford Town comfortably won 2-0.

Harris has already drafted in additional backroom staff and brought in winger Adam Page on loan from Cheltenham. His loan spell with Hereford was cut short and was named as a substitute for Town's game against Coventry City earlier in the month, but didn't feature.

Other familiar faces include goalkeeper Ethan Ross, who had a brief spell at Edgar Street preseason. He was brought in on a short-term deal from West Bromwich Albion to cover for the injured Martin Horsell. Stuart Fleetwood signed for the Worcestershire club after leaving Merthyr when their financial problems came to light. The 31-year old made 92 appearances for Hereford United across two spells at the club.

Redditch's Dior Angus is the fourth highest goalscorer in the Southern Premier so far this season, scoring 15 goals in 20 league appearances. He sits just below John Mills, who's scored 17.

Hereford still have a number of players out with various injuries, including Mike McGrath, Tyrone Duffus and Calvin Dinsley. Mike Symons could be back in contention as he returns from the knock he picked up at Chesham, and Rob Purdie is also fully fit despite not featuring at Merthyr.

Tickets for the game are selling well, with a crowd of over 3,000 expected for Hereford's first game of 2018. They'll be on sale at Edgar Street from 12pm tomorrow, with kick off at 3pm.

New Year Message from HUST Chairman

HUST CHAIRMAN’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO SUPPORTERS 2018

A Personal View by Richard Tomkins

This time last year we were talking about an electric atmosphere against Evesham. Our FA Cup exploits against Eastleigh, Telford and Fleetwood have surpassed that. Thanks to all Hereford FC fans near and far for their sterling efforts for our club. Because of you, and our football team, once again the Hereford name is in the sporting calendar.
Much work goes on behind the scenes at Hereford FC and I pay tribute to all those involved. We have a club that could grace the Football League but it must currently be run on a low-costs basis. It is a young club which is still evolving. I was personally sad to see UITC’s operation changing, but HUST continues to remain on good terms with both UITC and HFC, and will endeavour to help the new academy and UITC. I believe that together, the Football Club, HUST and UITC can continue to develop pathways that will strengthen football in the county.
I am particularly proud of our links with Supporters Direct, and the compassion shown by Hereford fans for other clubs who are struggling. There will never be a shortage of struggling clubs, but if the supporter family can influence the Football Association in the appointment process of persons running clubs, others might avoid the pain we endured at Edgar Street.
For us that’s history now, but we have an ongoing opportunity at Edgar Street to build a club with a large supporter stake-holding. The door is open for the Supporters Trust to purchase shares in our football club and I continue to believe we should firmly embrace this principle. HFC has a unique ownership model that offers some protection from a return to those previous dark days which we never want to relive.
We have shown in the past year that the Trust is an integral part of keeping football at Edgar Street. Success on the field has led to increasing needs for off the field assistance. We continue to develop the ‘pool’ of Hereford supporters out there who have skills, talents and ideas that can be tapped into. Further opportunities will arise and I am convinced that with everybody working together our club will maintain its prosperity.
HUST is driving forward with fund-raising initiatives, events and promotions. The longer-term lease is now available to the club, and I look forward to it being triggered at the opportune time, enabling other projects to get under way.
May I wish all HFC supporters a Happy New Year.
Let’s be ‘Forever United’.
Richard Tomkins

Chairman, Hereford United Supporters’ Trust

Sykes Joins Harris At Redditch

A former Hereford United youngster, Alex Sykes, is to be assistant manager at Redditch.

Manager Tim Harris says he is delighted to have Sykes to help him.

"I am delighted Alex has decided to join me at Redditch United, as we look forward to building a team and improving the club," said Harris.

“Alex is someone that I have managed and known for many years, and he boasts some great qualities. He is an excellent coach, has a bubbly personality, and I am positive the players will enjoy working with him as part of the management team.”

Redditch are the visitors to Edgar Street on Monday afternoon, kick-off 3pm.

Tickets for the game remain available online or can be purchased on the day.

Meanwhile former Hereford FC loanee Adam Page, now on loan from Cheltenham at Redditch, doesn't know if he will be in the Redditch squad at Hereford on Monday.

"It will be a bit strange if I do play because I've never played away there before," Page told the Hereford Times.

Southern Premier League Attendances

Below is a table of the attendances at clubs in the Southern Premier League this season to date (League games only):

Hereford's figure is down by 17% according to non-league matters, however the New Years Day home fixture against Redditch is expected to attract a gate of over 3000 so the drop may be somewhat less after that gate is counted in.

26,000 Support Wembley FC's Petition

Over 26,000 signatures have been collected in support of a petition to the FA by Wembley FC.

The aim is to stop the FA from forcing Wembley Football Club to drop Wembley from its name.

Yesterday founder of the petition, Susan Gale, commented.

'Totally amazed by the support - over 25,000 signatures and still rising ! Yes - I started the petition and not a member of Wembley FC ! Just hate bullies especially corporate ones - and when the do this to my hometown football club!'

Hereford FC have confirmed that they will play St Neots on Tuesday February 20th.

The game was originally set to be played on January 13th but was postponed because of Hereford playing in the FA Trophy on that date.

The club has also reported that they will play Ewyas Harold in the HFA Cup on Tuesday February 27th.

Both games are to be played at Edgar Street.

Page To Go On Loan To Redditch

Adam Page is to go on loan to Redditch United. The young winger was recently recalled early from a loan with Hereford as parent club Cheltenham had lots of players out with injury.

It's not known if Page will play for Redditch against Hereford on New Years Day.

Redditch manager Tim Harris persuaded Cheltenham to let Page go to Gloucester on loan earlier this season.

News Round Up

Following their recent takeover by former Portsmouth chairman Iain McInnes, Gosport Borough have reduced admission prices for their New Years Day game against Weymouth. Under new manager Alex Pike, Boro enjoyed a brief spell off the foot of the table, but returned after results on Boxing Day didn't go their way.

Former Barrow boss Micky Moore ruled out a return to Redditch United as their manager, telling the Non-League Paper he is waiting for 'the right project'. Tim Harris was appointed the Reds' new manager after quitting Gloucester City last month.

Banbury United's poor home form continued on Tuesday as Mike Ford's side lost 2-1 to Dunstable, with the struggling side coming from behind to claim all three points. He told the Banbury Guardian injured players had more chance of featuring in their next game at Stratford because those that played against Dunstable 'didn't do enough'.

Wealdstone, who Hereford face in the FA Trophy second round, have signed Marcus Johnson-Schuster from Southern Premier side Basingstoke Town. The 23-year old right back returned for his second spell with Basingstoke in the summer of 2016 after spending the previous year with Swindon Supermarine.

After trouble during Tuesday's game, Weymouth and Dorchester Town have issued a joint statement condemning the actions of the 'small minority' who misbehaved. The Dorset Echo reports that 'flares and crackers' were thrown onto the pitch, including 'missiles' towards Dorchester's goalkeeper. The clubs are working together to identity the offenders and their names will be passed onto the police.

Southern Prem Boxing Day Review

A review of all the games played on Boxing Day in the Southern Premier League written by Steve Whitney.

Boxing Day`s results which saw leaders King`s Lynn Town held at home by third-bottom St Ives Town and second-placed Kettering Town`s 4-2 win at St Neots Town, sets up New Year`s Day`s encounter between the two perfectly, with just a point separating them now.
Simon Lappin opened the scoring on 30 minutes from a free-kick after Ryan Hawkins had been hauled down on the edge of the box.
But just minutes into the second half the visitors drew level, Danny Watson calmly slotting past Alex Street.
The Poppies had a great start at St Neots when Rene Howe put them in front after just 8 minutes.
Recent signing Lewis Irwin eventually pulled the Saints back on level terms on 58 minutes, only for Howe to restore the visitors` lead 5 minutes later.
Aaron O`Connor stretched the Poppies` lead to 3-1 just 4 minutes later, only for Dylan Williams to reduce the arrears less than a minute later.
But Matt Stevens popped up with the Kettering winner 12 minutes from time.
The top two now possess a three-point cushion over third-placed Weymouth after the Terras were unable to overcome neighbours Dorchester Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
In front of a crowd of 1,885, the Magpies came back from 2-0 down to earn a valuable share of the spoils.
Charlie Davis after 39 minutes and then Brandon Goodship on 69 minutes gave the Terras` their advantage.
But less than a minute later, Antonio Diaz pulled one back and the same player equalised in the 78th minute.

Another bonus for the top two was fourth-placed Hereford FC, who possess games in hand, being held to a goalless draw at Pendydarren Park by battling Merthyr Town.
Although far from being a classic for a terrific crowd of 2,612, the draw did at least help the Bulls reach a landmark of going fifty away league games without defeat.

Fifth-placed Tiverton Town`s game at Ladysmead against Frome Town was abandoned in the second half due to a waterlogged pitch.
It was probably a blessing for Tivvy, as they were 2-0 down at the time!
Slough Town, with games in hand, are five points behind Tiverton in sixth after inflicting a 5-1 hammering on fast-falling Farnborough at Arbour Park.
A crowd of 668 saw James Dobson give the hosts the boost of an early 2nd minute lead.
But it wasn`t until 4 minutes into the second period that Mark Nisbet doubled that lead and 6 minutes later, Nathan Webb added a third.
Chris Flood made it 4-0 with 65 minutes gone on the clock.
Just 4 minutes later though, Boro reduced the deficit through Dan Walker.
But Gavin James made it a nap hand for the Rebels 10 minutes from time.
Slough moved above Hitchin Town after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Garden Walk against mid-table Royston Town.
Adam Marriott gave the Crows a good start with a goal in the 6th minute.
And Scott Bridges quicky added a second in the 10th minute.
Tremayne Charles pulled one back after 32 minutes, but the home side held firm.
At the other end of the table, Dunstable Town gained a 2-1 victory at the Spencer Stadium against Banbury United to climb off the bottom.
United went in front in the 12th minute through Jack Self.
However, Dunstable responded well and equalised in the 19th minute when a cross by Andrew Osei-Bonsu was headed home by Kieran Ogden.
Dunstable went in front on 74 minutes when after a good save by United goalkeeper Niall Clayton, Peter Kioso was in the right place to knock home the loose ball from close range.
Gosport Borough find themselves back at the foot of the table after losing 3-0 at the Camrose against Basingstoke Town.
Callum Bunting after 33 minutes gave the hosts an interval lead that Sam Smart after 63 minutes and Bunting again 14 minutes from time, added to.
Stratford Town moved up to tenth after winning 2-0 in Tim Harris` first game in charge of Redditch United.
A brace from Ben Stephens in the 34th and 45th minutes eventually proved enough for the visitors.
It finished 0-0 between Kings Langley and Chesham United, while Biggleswade Town and Bishop`s Stortford shared a 2-2 Langford
Reece Fielding gave the Waders an early lead.
The Blues levelled from the spot through Jason Williams after 34 minutes.
A fine strike from Connor Hall restored the home side`s lead 9 minutes after the break, but the visitors earned a point with a 73rd minute Marvel Ekpiteta effort.

Merthyr Town 0 – Hereford 0

Martin Horsell
Hereford were held to a goalless draw by Merthyr Town on Boxing Day, with the South Wales club almost clinching the win if it wasn’t for Martin Horsell’s double-save in the dying stages of the game.

For his side’s fifth game in two weeks, Hereford boss Pete Beadle once again rung the changes. Billy Murphy, Pablo Haysham and Jamie Bird started ahead of the injured trio of Calvin Dinsley, Tyrone Duffus and Mike Symons, with Ryan Green returning to the heart of defence as Dara O’Shea dropped to the bench.

At a cold and damp Penydarren Park, the home side got the game underway and tested Hereford’s keeper within the first minute. Captain Ashley Evans saw a flicked effort from close range well-saved by Martin Horsell to deny Merthyr the opener.

The Bulls quick to respond at the other end of the field, as Pablo Haysham’s strike from within the area was blocked by the Martyr’s defence.

Other than the chance for Haysham, the Bulls rarely threatened. In the 18th minute, Jaye Bowen came close to capitalising on Ryan Green’s poor defensive header, but his rising shot narrowly beat the crossbar.
Eleven minutes later, Ryan Prosser’s rasping strike from range thankfully went just wide, with Martin Horsell well-beaten in the Hereford goal.

The final chance of the first half fell to Cameron Pring, who blazed his shot from 18-yards well over. From a corner, the ball was punched clear by former Bull Oliver Davies, but the Bristol City loanee’s shot sailed over the crossbar.

HT: Merthyr Town 0 – Hereford 0

Attacking the travelling fans in the second half, Hereford were first to threaten. Keyon Reffell came close to scoring against his former team, forcing the keeper into pulling off a fine save to deny him the opener.

Moments later Jamie Bird was brought down on the edge of the area as he raced towards goal. The resulting free kick from Bird took a deflection off the six man wall, before being parried by the keeper – Jimmy Oates was able to get to the ball, but poked an effort just wide.

Another chance for Reffell followed, but his effort went wide at the far post after dispossessing Jarrad Wright on the left wing.

Chances for the Martrys’ Ryan Prosser and Ian Traylor weren’t enough to take the lead, as Prosser’s glancing header beat the crossbar before Traylor volleyed harmlessly wide.

Shout For A Penalty?
In a rather frustrating game for Hereford, John Mills was isolated up top in what looked like a 4-5-1 formation. It wasn’t until Lance Smith was introduced ten minutes from time that the Bulls looked more creative, but still weren’t able to properly test the keeper.

But it was Merthyr who had the final chances of the game, as Martin Horsell pulled off a double save to leave the Welsh Valleys with a point. Ian Traylor was fouled on the edge of the area, but Horsell parried Traylor’s effort from the free kick, before saving Harrison Lewis’ follow up shot with his feet.

FT: Merthyr Town 0 – Hereford 0
Att: 2,612

It was a disappointing outing for the Bulls, but of the teams in the top eight, they only lost ground to Slough Town and Kettering. They currently sit six points behind leaders King’s Lynn with four games in hand.

Hereford: Hereford: Horsell, Oates, Pring, Murphy, Green, Deaman, Richards (Smith – 79’), Reffell, Mills, Haysham, Bird (Preen – 72’).
Subs not used: O'Shea, Harris, Preston.

Merthyr Town: O Davies, A Davies, Harris, Evans (c), Tancock, Wright, Jenkins, Reddy, Prosser, Bowen (Lewis – 62’), Taylor
